AdobeTV – InDesign to Flash

Oct 13, 2009

This episode from AdobeTV guides you through getting your InDesign documents out to Flash. The first example shows you how to output a simple SWF file and the second example goes further using an XFL file so you can edit your pages in Flash.

Quick Tip: InDesign CS4 – Relinking to a Folder

Here is a quick tip to relink all of your images in your InDesign Document to a different file extension without going through them one by one.

Quick Tip: InDesign Interchange (INX)

You are probably familiar with the InDesign Interchange file (INX) as a means of backsaving InDesign CS4 files so they can be opened in InDesign CS3. What you might not know however, is that it can also be a handy troubleshooting tool.

If you are experiencing minor corruption with an Indesign document, try exporting the file to INX and then opening it back up in InDesign. The new streamlined file will often strip out any weird glitches.

Go to the ‘File’ menu
Choose ‘Export…’
From the ‘Format:’ drop-down menu select ‘InDesign CS3 Interchange (INX)’, then click ‘Save’.

Another option for CS4 users is exporting to an InDesign Markup (IDML). This should have the same effect but note that these files cannot be opened in CS3.

Tips, Tricks and Goodies

Here’s a few interesting things that we have come across lately

Creating Booklets from PDFs
Booklet Creator is a free online tool that lets you create a booklet from a PDF. For example a PDF set up as pages 1-8 would be saved as a new PDF with spreads 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5 allowing you to print it out and check your layout. With Booklet Creator being web based all you need to make use of it is a web browser and a PDF.

Folded documents in InDesign challenging enough for you?
If you have ever had trouble setting up documents correctly that allow for folding then you should check out FOLDrite. They can produce InDesign template files that contain all the correct trim and fold calculations for complex folded documents and could save you hours of anguish making sure your inspired design will work. There are 2 ways you can utilise their product.

  • FOLDRite Template Master – Is an InDesign Plug-In which is purchased as an application and run inside your copy of InDesign.
  • Foldfactory.com – Is an online InDesign web product that allows you to create and purchase FOLDRite templates online and then download them to your computer for use in InDesign.
Although purchasing the Template Master isn’t cheap it does contain 80+ unique variations on folding themes. Otherwise the online option allows you to generate a single template for a specific job and takes a lot of the educated guesswork out of the process. Check their website for more info on how these options work and how they could help you produce some unique and accurate folded InDesign masterpeices.

Ever been asked “what font do you think this is?”
WhatTheFont has been around for a while but it is such a great resource when you’re trying to match fonts. Simply upload a file containing the font you need to identify and it matches up the characters to it’s huge  database of fonts. If it can’t find a match submit it to the WhatTheFont Forum and let the resident font geeks help out.
