Congratulations to Craig and Marcus for successfully gaining their Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) certification for Adobe InDesign CS5. Craig and Marcus have demonstrated a professional level of proficiency with InDesign CS5. Both are now eagerly awaiting for the InDesign CS6 re-certification exam to become available.

Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite 6
Adobe have unveiled a new initiative called “Adobe Creative Cloud”. The Adobe Creative Cloud is essentially a new licensing model, membership for workgroups is US$69.99 per month per seat for an annual plan and give you access to the latest versions of Adobe’s software. Creative Cloud membership will give licensed members access to:
- All Adobe Desktop Applications, yep… everything in Creative Suite Master Collection as well as new tools such as Muse.
- Adobe’s Touch Apps
- Adobe’s services, such as the Digital Publishing Suite and cloud based fonts from their acquisition of Typekit.
Access to the Adobe Creative Cloud is expected to be available in the first half of 2012, expect more details to surface before the launch.
If you are able to take advantage of all of that Adobe software and services then the Creative Cloud is a great way to access it. You may find that if you just use a base Creative Suite Design Standard or Premium and don’t have a use for the extra Applications and services then you may be better to stick to upgrading when needed.
Adobe will be keeping separate Applications and Creative Suite editions available with the current licensing model. It is important to note that Adobe is changing what products will qualify for an upgrade to Creative Suite 6:
“In order to qualify for upgrade pricing when CS6 releases, customers will need to be on the latest version of our software (either CS5 or CS5.5 editions). If our customers are not yet on those versions, we’re offering a 20% discount through December 31, 2011 which will qualify them for upgrade pricing when we release CS6.”
So we are recommending that everyone take the opportunity to upgrade their Creative Suite 4 or earlier licenses to Creative Suite 5.5 before the end of the year. Once Creative Suite 6 is released licenses for Creative Suite 4 or earlier will not be eligible for an upgrade to Creative Suite 6.

We said at the last meeting that we would run this competition to create an interactive PDF in InDesign, the wizzier the better, then email it to us at auckland@indesignusergroup.com by Friday October 14. We will get resident ACE Paul Cracknell to judge for us and announce the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners at this meeting, but you must be there to qualify.

Adobe Photoshop – Protect Detail with the Sharpen Tool
The Sharpen Tool has been in Photoshop for some time and is a great tool for enhancing fine detail. Since Photoshop CS5 the Sharpen Tool has had the ‘Protect Detail’ option to minimize pixelation and artifacts.

Mac OSX Lion compatibility with Adobe Creative Suite
Adobe has done a lot of testing with Adobe Creative Suite and Mac OSX Lion. For the most part Creative Suite 5 and 5.5 are compatible with Apple’s new Operating System. The Adobe Reader plug-in for Safari is not compatible with the version of Safari that comes with Mac OSX Lion, also there are some issues with Flash Catalyst but overall no real show stoppers.
Adobe has found some issues with Creative Suite 3 and 4 and these are being documented at the moment. In our own internal testing we haven’t found anything that would stop you using these versions of Creative Suite with Mac OSX Lion.
Creative Suite 2 and earlier requires the use of Rosetta as it was made for PowerPC Macs. Rosetta is not a part of Mac OSX Lion so these versions of Creative Suite will not work. Any plugins that require the use of Rosetta will also not work.
