Documents created with InDesign CS 6 and down-saving for earlier versions

May 9, 2012

Here’s a popular tip for those about to move to InDesign CS6.

InDesign Documents (.indd) created in InDesign CS6 can’t be opened with earlier versions of InDesign, there is however an easy solution. With InDesign CS6 simply select “Save As…” then from the Format pull-down menu select “InDesign CS4 or later (IDML)”, click “Save” and your new IDML file can be opened with InDesign CS4 or later.

In the past if you needed to exchange files with people using an earlier version if InDesign you had to select “Export” from the “File” menu to export your InDesign Document to an InDesign Markup file (.idml).

If you are still on an earlier version of InDesign and try to open an InDesign CS6 Document you will get the following error:

‘Cannot open “filename.indd”. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign.’.
